Coinbase said it is preparing to launch tokenized stocks backed one-for-one by actual shares of US companies, a move that would put real equities, not synthetic claims, onto blockchain rails. The company’s pitch is blunt: “The first real 1:1 backed tokenized stocks are coming.”
On June 16, Coinbase said on X that users will be able to hold tokenized shares of US companies, trade them on-chain, redeem them and receive dividends automatically. The exchange stressed that the product is “not a derivative” and “not an IOU,” drawing a line between its plan and the looser wrappers that have sometimes defined earlier tokenized equity experiments.
That distinction matters. Tokenized stocks have been presented as a way to extend market hours, move ownership records onto blockchain infrastructure and automate payouts, but the structure behind the token is what determines whether the product is meaningful or just marketing. If Coinbase really keeps a 1:1 link to listed shares, the key questions shift to custody, redemption rights and whether regulators accept the setup.
The timing also puts pressure on rivals. Tokenized equities have become a crowded theme as crypto exchanges and fintech groups race to offer access to listed stocks, private shares and ETFs through blockchain networks. For traders, the appeal is obvious: 24-hour access, faster settlement mechanics and the possibility of moving traditional assets into a wallet-based format that behaves more like crypto.
Still, the market will need more than a post on X. Coinbase has not yet laid out the custody partner, the legal wrapper or the jurisdictions where the product will be available. Those details will decide whether this becomes a scalable market structure or another limited pilot that never clears the regulatory bar.
For now, the key watch item is Coinbase’s formal product disclosure, especially the custody model, redemption rules and rollout timetable. If those pieces are weak, the headline fades fast. If they are tight, Coinbase could force the next stage of competition in tokenized US equities.
