Hong Kong's central clearing house has called out a wave of counterfeit websites that dangle cash rewards to trick people into handing over crypto wallet credentials and bank details.
Hong Kong Interbank Clearing Limited (HKICL) issued a public notice on July 10 warning that it has identified multiple fake sites impersonating legitimate platforms. The scam works by promising users a cash bonus if they connect their virtual wallet or enter banking information – a lure that has already snagged victims who thought they were claiming a legitimate promotion.
Once a user bites, the fake site captures login credentials, wallet private keys, and possibly enough personal data to drain accounts. HKICL stressed that the fraudulent pages are designed to look nearly identical to real services, making them hard to spot at a glance.
The agency did not name specific wallets or exchanges that have been cloned. It said only that the scam uses "virtual wallet transactions" as the hook, meaning any crypto holder who sees an unsolicited offer of free cash should treat it with extreme suspicion.
This is not a new technique – phishing with fake giveaways is as old as crypto itself – but the scale and polish of the current operation caught HKICL's attention. The clearing house acts as the backbone for Hong Kong's interbank payments and settlement systems, so its visibility into cross-platform fraud is unusually high.
For traders, the main risk is obvious: a single compromised wallet can be emptied in seconds. Even two-factor authentication may not help if the scam collects the recovery seed phrase directly.
HKICL advised users to verify URLs carefully, never paste a seed phrase into a pop-up window, and only access wallet services through official app stores or bookmarked sites. It also asked anyone who encounters a suspected counterfeit page to report the URL to the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team.
The notice itself is a reminder that the line between convincing copy and the real thing is thinner than ever. Anyone who sees a "cash reward" tied to a wallet login should assume it is a trap until proven otherwise – and the proof should come from the actual wallet provider, not the site demanding the information.
