Sui moved nearly $65 billion in stablecoin transfers over five days after the blockchain zeroed out fees on those transactions, a sharp jump that underscores how much payment volume can be pulled forward when friction disappears.
The figure measures transfer throughput, not fresh demand for Sui's native token or a corresponding surge in economic activity. Still, it is a useful stress test for Mysten Labs' pitch that Sui can serve as a faster, cheaper alternative to traditional payment infrastructure.
Fee policy matters here. When transfers cost nothing, users and applications have little reason to route stablecoin payments elsewhere, especially for repeated, low-value flows where even small charges add up. That can make the network look suddenly busier without necessarily proving that the activity will hold once pricing changes again.
For traders, the key question is whether the volume is sticky. Zero-fee periods often invite opportunistic routing, arbitrage-style traffic and programmatic transfers that can fade quickly if the economics shift. If the bulk of those $65 billion came from a narrow set of wallets or apps, the headline number may flatter the network more than it reflects broad adoption.
Even so, the burst gives Sui a marketing edge at a time when blockchain teams are racing to claim a share of payments and settlement. Stablecoins remain one of the clearest use cases in crypto, and any chain that can show scale at low cost gets a stronger argument from payment processors, exchanges and wallet providers evaluating where to route flows.
Mysten Labs will now need to show whether the volume persists beyond the fee holiday. Watch for updated throughput data, wallet concentration, and any change to the fee schedule. If activity falls back sharply once costs return, the five-day spike will read less like adoption and more like a temporary rerouting of traffic.
