Tokenization of real-world assets just got a regulatory stamp. Ondo Finance has launched tokenized versions of BlackRock’s IVV ETF and Micron Technology stock, settling the tokens on Ethereum.
The move follows a custodial model that the Securities and Exchange Commission defined for digital securities. Ondo is the first to deploy it at scale with two major tickers – one a $400 billion-plus ETF tracking the S&P 500, the other a leading semiconductor name.
This isn’t an experiment. Ondo is issuing actual tokenized shares that represent ownership in the underlying assets, held by a qualified custodian under SEC rules. Settlement happens on Ethereum, meaning trades can clear in minutes rather than days, and in retail-sized fractions.
The Block first reported the launch. Ondo confirmed the structure and said it meets the SEC’s requirements for asset segregation and custody, a key hurdle that has kept many traditional issuers from moving on-chain. The SEC model, outlined in a series of staff guidance letters earlier this year, allows the issuer to avoid registering the tokens themselves as securities by keeping the custody layer separate from the blockchain layer.
For crypto traders, the implication is direct: blue-chip equities and ETFs are now tradable 24/7 on a public blockchain without the usual T+2 settlement window. Ondo’s tokens are ERC-20 compliant, so they can move across DeFi protocols, be used as collateral, or sit in self-custody wallets – provided the counterparty accepts the regulatory wrappers.
BlackRock’s iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) is the largest ETF by assets globally after its own SPY sibling. Micron, the Boise-based memory chip maker, is a frequent barometer for the semiconductor cycle. Together, they give the on-chain asset class a weight it did not have before.
Don’t expect a free-for-all. The custodial model still requires whitelisted addresses and compliance checks. Ondo has not disclosed which trading platforms will list the tokens first. The firm is in active discussions with both centralized exchanges and DeFi liquidity protocols, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Watch for the first listing announcement and for whether other issuers – Franklin Templeton, WisdomTree, or even BlackRock itself – follow Ondo’s regulatory playbook. That will determine whether this is a one-off or the start of a real on-chain equity market.
Ondo launches tokenized BlackRock ETF and Micron shares, speeding up trading on Ethereum
Ondo Finance created digital tokens representing real shares of BlackRock’s IVV ETF and Micron stock that settle trades in minutes on Ethereum. This affects investors by allowing faster, fractional trading of popular stocks without traditional delays.
